Protect Wyre Group

Protect Wyre Group is an umbrella organisation which was formed solely to co-ordinate the efforts of residents in their opposition to the Canatxx gas storage proposals for the Preesall and Stalmine salt field

Despite having their previous planning applications rejected by the Town,
Parish, Borough and County Councils, a Public Inquiry, the Secretary of
State and the residents of Wyre, Canatxx has submitted a revised planning
application to store up to 2 million tonnes of gas in the salt beneath the Wyre.

It is documented that pressurised gas can travel up to 10 miles underground from its source as it tries to surface, when under certain conditions, fire, explosion, property destruction and the loss of life are potential consequences.
Canatxx state in their application that the precise location and configuration of each cavern cannot be identified at this time; that if a cavern does not pass the tests they would attempt to determine the reasons for failure; that observed fractures (faults) in the salt bed appear totally infilled and are almost certainly gas tight and that the overburden is likely to be gas tight.

Canatxx has had over 10 years to properly evaluate this site, to drill test bores,
to prove the site’s safety and to produce irrefutable scientific evidence that it
meets the criteria for safe gas storage. They have not done so!
