Reduced VAT
Anyone over 60 who has difficulty walking or has chronic health problems affecting their mobility could qualify for a new perk introduced last July, which means they pay less VAT for modifications to their home.
This can shave hundreds of pounds off bills paid to a plumber or builder installing anything from a walk in shower to hand rails for the stairs.
Rather than pay 17.5% VAT, they only have to pay 5%. There are 11m disabled people in Britain, of which 4.6m are over 60. But many elderly people are missing out - either because they have no idea the benefits exist, or because their plumber or builder is still charging the full rate.
