Older people get their say
The Wyre Pensioners’ Forum is looking for new members with an enthusiasm for promoting the concerns of older people and learning more about the services and benefi ts available to them.
Set up several years ago by Wyre Borough Council as a way of positively engaging with its older population, today’s forum still draws support from the council but sets its own agenda items. Topics currently being discussed include concessionary travel passes and Wyre development plans.
Forum members also have a responsibility to pass on what they learn to their own communities and take part in consultations on new ideas and initiatives proposed by the council and other service providers.
Meetings take place every two months at the Civic Centre, Poulton. These are frequently attended by representatives from other organisations interested in the concerns of older people, such as the police and armed forces. There is also regular interaction with local MPs and council bosses.
Forum chair Paul Deacon, the council’s Community Engagement Offi cer, said: “We are really keen to get new members on board in order to build up a true refl ection of what our older citizens care about.
“As well as a way of getting their voices heard, members can also use the forum to learn more about services they may not be aware of.
“We welcome people from all walks of life. All they need to do is give us a call beforehand to let us know they’re interested.”
