Swim Suits A-Go-Go

Free Swimming For Young & Old 26-03-09 Dear visitor to my site!               As Mayor and Mayoress there are certain things you have an obligation to perform. One is to promote council initiatives and raise their profile to increase take up. Well here we are raising the profile of free public swimming for young and old. I can only hope it does the trick, because if it does it will be time well spent.

Wyre Mayoral ball 20-03-09 The Mayoral ball does not "Just Happen" a lot of work has to be done in the background by Wyres staff. As the Mayoress commented "It's just like arranging a wedding" and it is . You can just imagine the pitfalls that can happen, but not at Wyre. In the photo you can see the team. Left Ann (Mayors Secretary. Centre Mayoress. Right Trish (Marine Hall) On the night it went off without a hitch, and from the comments I received, a good time was had by all. Thanks to all who worked for the event and thanks to everyone who supported it.

Breck Girl Guides Troop AGM 16-03-09 It's a long time since I have taken part in a beetle drive, but last month I broke my duck. Great fun! I have not had as much fun for a long time. All rushing about, throwing dice, looking for certain numbers to create our beetle before anyone else did. I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for something fresh to play. Even if it is a very old game. Thanks to the Breck Girl Guides Poulton.

Land Army 01-03-09 It's a long time since the end of the second world war, and the work done growing food to feed the country, by the women's land army was never recognised for the contribution it made to winning the war on the home front.  That has now been put right, with a medal being awarded to women who did their bit. The photo is of Vera, a longtime aquaintance from Knott-End, outside Blackburn Cathedral after the service of comemoration.

Fleetwood Beer Festival 20-02-09 My Very favourite subject REAL ALE and the chance to open Fleetwood Beer Festival and taste some "Proper beer" It was a great event, happening every year at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood. I was asked to be part of the tasting panel for specialist beers that would go to the national festival later in the year. There were some very worthy ales represented and I was asked to taste quite a few which was an honour for me. There are a lot of micro breweries on the Fylde coast and they were all represented. I rejoined CAMRA after letting my membership lapse some years ago. It is good to watch micro breweries keep the best traditions of British brewing alive and heartening to see so many younger people joining the movement away from larger and towards traditional ale with a flavour second to none. Thanks CAMERA I had a great day at Fleetwood Beer Festival!

Valentines Night Ball Fylde Coast Golf Clubs 14-02-09. A romantic evening dining and dancing the night away at the Blackpool Hilton to live music in the company of a lively set of guests from across the Fylde coast golf clubs. Both the Mayoress and myself had a great night and enjoyed the occasion.

Chinese New Year Preston (Year of the Ox) 08-02-09. The fun started with Chinese tea and carried on with a parade of Lion dancers. There was lots of noise,  clanging of cymbals, banging of drums and fireworks going off (All very satisfactory) I have to say that it was rather cold as the wind blew through Prestons open market. It was O.K. when the festivities began with a colourful dragon and the lions winding their way through the city centre. I think it was safe to say a good time was had by all and the new year was well and truly let in.

Kings Own Border Regiment Lay up Colours in Carlisle 07-02-09 This was a sad visit in some ways, as the Kings Own Border Regiment laid up its colours in Carlisle Civic Centre after amalgamation with the Duke of Lancasters Regiment. The service of laying up was in Carlisle cathedral after which we marched through the city to the castle, presented the colours to the Mayor and then processed to the civic centre

David Bellamy Visits Wyre Countryside Ecology Park 08-02-09. The well known ecologist David Bellamy visited the Wyre ecology centre to celebrate twenty one years of environmental improvements on the river. Lots of Wyre volunteers rangers helped show David the many improvements they have created in and around the park. A massive cake was cut and enjoyed by all to help mark the occasion.

Burns Night at Wyre. 25-01-09. What a great night! Everyone enjoyed the evening as we celebrated Rabby Burns and his poetry. Once we had eaten our meal of haggis neeps and tatties, the mayoress had toasted the laddies, the mayor toasted the lassies and the deputy mayor read "Ode to a mouse" the evening then set off with a real swing as you can see. Everyone was on a steep learning curve  trying to get their heads round the steps to both Scottish and old time dancing. By the look on most of the faces enjoyment was the name of the game and we went to in with gusto!

Hillhouse Firemen Long Service Awards. In the words of the immoral bard it's de'javu all over again. This event was like going home. I have spent the last thirty years of my life working alongside the firemen I awarded the medals to and it was a real pleasure to visit a place with so many fond memories and make awards to men who have served the site so well.

Garstang Victorian Evening 15-12-08. Garstang at Christmas is a magical place and well worth a visit on one of the two "Victorian Evenings" It is just what you would expect of a small Lancashire market town. Friendly, welcoming and full of people out for a night of fun. Lots are dressed in period costume and the stalls lining the street sell all sorts of produce from Darth Vaders light sabres to roast chestnuts. The accent is very firmly on tradition as the streets are filled with Clog Dancers, Morris Men, Punch and Judy and all sorts of things to eat and buy. With this being my Mayoral year Yvonne and I dress for the occasion. I recommend it to young and old and everyone in between. All the shops are doing their bit for the occasion. It's mulled wine and mincepies all round. Good Luck Garstang and all the best for the new year.

Poulton at Christmas 05-12-08. Poulton does not do things by halves! Together with a Christmas market and fair, Santa arrives by train and sleigh. After the lighting of the crib in St Chads we sing carols. The festive sleigh winds its way complete with Santa and preceded by the Mayor, Mayoress and a trad jazz band through the town to The Market Place. It is great to see so many Poulton residents at the fair, They are not just visiting but are really getting into the spirit of the season

Switching on The Christmas Lights in Cleveleys 27-11-08. I feel I am in the presence of greatness as we switch Cleveleys Christmas lights on. The switch we use is the original used to light up the illumination's in Blackpool for over seventy years. When I think of the famous hands that have clasped the handle we are using tonight I am proud we have used it in Wyre. Foolishly I try to sing a carol. (Never again!) I make myself a solemn promise. If anyone thrusts a mike into my hand and says "Give us a song Mr Mayor" I will resist the urge with every fibre in my being. Because as far as singing goes my throat is a "No go area"

Garstang Christmas Lights Switch on 24-11-08 The run up to Christmas starts here! From now on until just before Christmas the pace of engagements increases at a phenominal rate. But it a'int half good. The speed of events, the kids faces, the carols. It is a magic time of year for Wyres Mayoralty, everone is in party mode and its off we go like a skyrocket, so hang on. Yesterday we switched on the Christmas tree in Garstang and dedicated the crib. It was a cold crisp winter night. The stars were shining and the centre of Garstang was looking like a picture from a Christmas card (It's that sort of a place) We have lots more to do yet and we will enjoy every minute!

Young Peoples Charity Concert 19-11-08 We have just had a great night out at the Marine Hall Fleetwood. Lots of youngsters from across Wyre came together under the guidance of John Shedwick, to produce a great talent show. From the serious work by Rossall School choir to the music from their jazz band. It was a feel good night when the whole community got involved by joining in with the entertainment. I have never seen so many young people having so much fun for such a good cause. Thanks to all who took part for all the work you have done and for supporting the Mayoral charity!

Diwali Festival Arnold School Blackpool 15-11-08

It is the first time we have attended a Hindu festival and we had a great time. The entertainment was taken straight from Bollywood with more than a large dash of classical Indian dance. Children sang prayers . Then it was time for the fireworks; lots of bangs a coloured flashes in the sky, then on to the food. Strictly vegitarian, I have always said tht if I was thinking of becoming a vegetarian I would follow the diet of the East because they have been at it so much longer than us Westerners.

St Oswalds Christmas Fayre Preesall 15-11-08.

It seemed as if the whole village had turned out to the Christmas Fayre at St Oswalds and I must have known the best part of them. It just goes to show what village life is all about, making friends with lots of people and chatting about activities in and around the village. Lots of money was raised for church funds from over two hundred who attended.

E2E (Education to Employment) Launch 10-11-08.

Once again we attend the launch of an initiative to give young people a second chance of education, and a step towards employment. The occasion is made all the better by having Steve Davies (Snooker Legend) in attendance. I remember seeing him win the world snooker championship for the first time many years ago . Since then he has gone on to win it another five times. He is a great guy who is putting a lot of effort into helping kids who did not get much of a chance the first time round. Well done Steve! Judging by the interest shown you are making a big difference to the lives of some of our disadvantaged younger generation.

Ninety Years on! Remembrance Sunday Fleetwood 09-11-08.

It is always a thought provoking occasion Remembrance Sunday. We meet and talk to veterans of conflicts from across the world. As we march to the war memorial the wind is blowing hard and cold down the street but no one is put off their stride, or thinks about the cold. Keeping in time with the band we march to Memorial Park and come to a stop, waiting for the eleventh hour and the playing of the last post. I then lay the wreath for the people of Wyre. It is a very emotional moment, made all the more so by the large number of Fleetwood people who have turned out to show their respect for the sacrifice of people in times of war. This is another occasion I will never forget.

Round Table Bonfire Cottam Hall Poulton.

It's the first time I have lit a bonfire in quite a few years. The last time that comes to mind I was in short pants and lived a way away from Poulton. All the excitement and anticipation was still there though. We had a grandstand view of the fireworks. Rockets and Roman candles in all sorts of colours and how could I forget the plane and simple "Big Bangs" What fun we had! Thanks Round Table you made my night!

Sylvan Sound at St Oswalds 18-10-08.

The Mayoral Charity is now better off to the tune of £535 thanks to the silver tones of the Sylvan Sound. They offered their services so as to swell the charity coffers. It was a Saturday afternoon of high culture at St Oswalds Preesall, as the ladies of the choir raised the roof with a programme of songs and music, with a broad appeal. A big thanks from me to all involved, especially the team from the village hall who made the cakes and sandwiches for the afternoon tea which followed.

Bleasdale School a Jewel in The Hills 14-10-08

Bleasdale school have just extended their staff accommodation and Yvonne and I are asked to cut the tape to open along it with Jessica Kitts the Young Peoples Mayor as part of democracy week. Jess makes a fine job of chatting with the children. Yvonne and I had a walk around the school grounds in the summer, when we attended World Environment Day at the village hall nearby. Just twenty three pupils on the roll and a feeling that everyone helps each other. It is what I have always thought of as a village school. The same farming families generation after generation and a glorious setting in the hills. Total involvement was the order of the day between staff and children, this is a good school with an excellent OFSTED. Well done! Bleasdale

Gladys Jenkins 100 Not Out. 11-10-08

We have just visited Gladys Jenkins who is celebrating her hundredth birthday. Gladys lives in Freeborne House care home in Thornton. The whole family had come from across the country to help her with her party. There are photos of Gladys in the nineteen twenties when she was dancing in both London and Paris. I am very interested in her recollections of her life on the stage. I get talking to some of her relatives who it turns out live near Duxford in Cambridgeshire and help restore world war two aircraft. Gladys is great fun and I suspect she has had a very happy life.

Team Thirteen Princes Trust 10-10-08

It was decided that the sea front walk at Fleetwood needed a good clean up and team thirteen were just the people to do it. So they got to work with shovels and spades, shifting tons of sand that had blown across the sand dunes to the beach. The task was finished and on Friday the fruits of their labour could be seen by all. Not only is it now easier to access the beach on foot but it is also clear for the use of one of Wyres battery operated "Tramper" all terrain

HMS Pinafore Lowther Pavilion 07-10-08

This was my first experience of live Gilbert and Sullivan and what a joy it was! I was probably helped by the the music being as familiar as it was as the handle on the big front door was polished. The cast were good using the lyrics to lampoon the royal navies pecking order of the nineteenth century. After the show we were taken back stage to see to the cast. I just could not imagine how they managed to remember their lines as some of the parts were massive. The Lowther was very nearly full and it was good to see so many people attending. Well done to all who performed on the night both the mayoress and myself had a great evening.

North West in Bloom Liverpool. 06-10-08

We arrived in Liverpool early, and in time to speak to the Lord mayor. This was a very well supported event at the Echo Arena on the banks of the Mersey .Cities and boroughs across the North West were involved with Wyre once again in the forefront of the awards, having won gold with Garstangs entry in the Entente Florale competition. There were some interesting winners from inner city areas who had improved their local environment by using flower planters made from old tin baths and so on. From the photos they seemed very inventive.

Mayoral Tour of Pendle District

The party of Mayors from across Lancashire were very lucky with the weather last Monday as we visited tourist attractions across Pendle district. Starting at the Heritage Centre in Barrowford we set off by coach seeing the country that produced mistress Demdyke and the rest of the Pendle witches, who came to a sticky end at Lancaster castle. One of the highlights for the Mayoress was a visit to the new Boundary Mill site for a fish and chip lunch at "Bannys" We then moved on, via an animal petting farm, which opened specially for us, and as you can see from the photo was very popular, to sail along the Leeds Liverpool canal which was central to the industrial revolution, but is now a thriving tourist attraction.

Knott-End & Preesall Playgroup is Forty 27-09-08

It was a trip back in time for the Mayoress as we attended Knott-End & Preesall Playgroups fortieth birthday party. When we looked over past photos and books Yvonnes writing could be seen from twenty five years ago, and we talked to Ann Hedges who it turned out started the Playroup all that time ago ago. It was really nice to see all the kids enjoying themselves, playing games and using the play equipment. We have known the ladies who work there for many years and see them regularly in the village. That's what living in a rural community is all about. Community spirit and friendly faces. Sharing a chat and eating home made cakes.

Wyre Supports 2012 Olympics

We had a very interesting visit to the Preston Sports Centre to meet with Lord Seb Coe and support Lancashire's bid as a training venue for the 2012 Olympics. Lord Coe was a very approachable and knowledgeable character and I was very pleased to have met him. The facilities at the sports ground are very good as you would expect. He had to rush to another engagement in Cheshire, so we had little time to talk which is a pity as I think the facilities in Preston would make a superb Olympic training venue.

Split And The Entente Floral Gold Award For Garstang & Wyre 18-09-08

A delegation representing Garstang and Wyre journeyed to Split in Croatia to recieve a gold award for the excellence of their entry in the Europe wide competition Entente Florale, which is similar to Britain in Bloom but covers a more extensive set of criteria. The delegation was treated very well by the Mayor and deputy Mayor of Split. Split and the surrounding area is fascinating and picturesque, having just started to get back on its feet after the war that raged in the area in the mid nineties. We stayed in the mediaeval town of Trogjir with its winding streets and beautiful harbour. Split is the site of the very impressive palace of Diocletian, which occupies a large part of the old city and is in very good condition. We were taken to visit many of the cultural site that Croatia has to offer

Mayoral Tour of The Borough 12-09-08

It was an early start on Friday, with representatives from across Lancashire, gathering at the civic centre to be shown the best of Wyre and how we do things in our borough. We boarded the coach and we were off to the Wyre Ecology Centre at Stannah for coffee. Once again we seem to have been blessed with good weather. We then moved on to visit the award winning sea defences at Cleveleys, The tide was up and you could smell the ozone in the air, It was a glorious morning and I am proud of the job the borough has done, making what is a very functional piece of kit look absolutely outstanding. Even a visitor from Scotland wanted to take a photo of the party. Then it was off to the Nautical College at Fleetwood and a visit to the "Virtual Ships Bridge" Everyone was impressed. After lunch we boarded the world famous Knott_End Ferry and sailed across the Wyre to visit my village of Knott-End and view its attractions. Boarding the coach once again we headed for an organic farm at Pilling for a very informative talk about the quality of the food we are buying. Then it was off to Garstang and a tour of the town and explanation of the Entente Florale event and the community involvement it encouraged. The tour ended at the Barton Grange Garden Centre with a mandatory look at the gents toilets. The tour made me proud to be able to represent such a diverse and interesting borough. To my mind one of the jewels of Lancashire.

Charity Coffee Morning 11-09-08

Yvonne and I had the pleasure of attending a very nice coffee morning in aid of the Mayoral Charity put on by Joan Butterworth, one of our close friends from the village. The weather was warm and the sun was shining for a change, after such a lousy summer! Joans house was full and it was all hands to the pump serving coffee, cakes and running the Tombola and raffle. Joans family were all there, with Maureen her sister going great guns with the Tombola. I was in the minority of one, flying the flag for us men. We had a very enjoyable morning with a great sense of community, and I have to say a big "THANKS" to Joan and her family and friends for raising so much money for our charity.

Charity Golf Match Knott-End Golf Club. 27-08-08

At least we had dry if not sunny weather . Wyres finest set forth upon the sea of adversity that is the golf course. All in a good cause as usual. Thirty six intrepid golfers did battle to help terminally ill children have a happy family holiday, and in doing so had a good time their selves. The golf tournament arranged by Cllr Paul Moon was a very well attended event with golfers from across Wyre spoiling a good walk across Knott-End golf course. It all ended with the usual suspects in the photo sweeping the board with excellent golf being played by Cllr Pete Murphy. Once again thanks to all who took part and contributed to the Mayoral charity.

Fleetwood Half Marathon 24-08-00

Over three hundred dedicated runners took part in this event. It was good to see so many people turn out to take the healthy option. I have to say they put me in the shade with their enthusiasm and sheer guts. They ran for thirteen miles. No mean feat for amateurs even though some were obviously very used to the steady rhythm of the race judging by their physique. Well done keep it up! Ihope you are back next year and put the Fleetwood event firmly on the running calendar in the North West. If you look at my face it tells a vivid story. No one told me the starting pistol would be so loud!

Bag Pack at B&M Bargains 23&24-08-08

Well nobody said it would be easy raising funds for a worthy cause! But last Saturday and Sunday did prove a well known saying. "Many hands make light work" and so it proved as Lots of volunteers gave up their bank holiday weekend in the cause of the Mayoral Charity by helping pack bags at B&M bargains in Cleveleys. We raised the sum of £904 for the Mayoral charity. Thanks to all who helped for a job well done!

Strawberry Tea Charity Event 16-08-8

I spent the whole week watching the weather forecast on the Internet. And no matter how I looked, the forecast just did not improve. Friday , Sunny. Saturday, Rainy. Sunday, Sunny. Well I need not have worried because the weather for Saturday afternoon was great and we could walk around the Civic Centre gardens in the sun. We had a really good turn out in support of the charity. (Well over a hundred people) The local supermarkets Sainsburys, Asda and Morrison's came up trumps, providing all we needed as well as local shops; Taylor's in Cleveleys and the Home Bakery in Fleetwood . Thanks go to every contributor and to everyone who attended. You did a magnificent job for the Mayoral Charity.

Garstang Arrts Festival 16-08-08

I had to open my mouth about the weather! We sat in the rain at the High Street car park Garstang whilst the heavens opened. Fortunately we had come prepared with a plastic cape and an umbrella, So it was O.K. Morecambe brass band played and there was some pleasant banter. We will certainly remember this engagement.

Coffee Morning at Sue Warburtons 05-08-08

Yvonne and I have a long journey to our best friends house. Sue is putting on a coffee morning for the Mayoral charity. We raise a few eyebrows in the car park of the local Morrisons as we done the Mayoral chains, so as to arrive in all our splendour. The day goes off a treat but I have to say I am once again in a minority of one, being surrounded by lots of memebrs of the fairer sex. We raise a good sum for the charity though, so it is all very worth while.

Fleetwood Lifeboat Day 02-08-08

I am starting to feel we are very lucky (Crossed Fingers) The weather is really kind to us again for our trip to Wyre light, courtesy of the RNLI Fleetwood. The visit starts as we are shown around the lifeboat station, and a video of the the loss of Riverdance, when she came ashore at Cleveleys. It was taken the morning after, in the light of day, but you get a real insight into what it was like the previous night; in the dark, with mountainous waves and only a few hundred yards from the shore, in quite shallow water. A job well done by Fleetwood lifeboat and its crew. After our tour we are kitted out with weatherproofs and life jackets and board the boat. The tide is well up and there is quite a swell. The captain of the Stena Leader who is a member of the lifeboat crew dresses his ship for the occasion. Signal flags spell out RNLI and the RNLI flag is flying from the Jack Staff. When we are well clear of the shore, Yvonne and I get a chance to steer the boat. I feel very privilaged to be Mayor of Wyre as it gives us the chance of a lifetime to attend occasions such as this, flying the flag for the borough and being asked to do things that come round once in a lifetime if you are lucky. Thanks to the crew of Fleetwood lifeboat the Mayoress and myself had a memorable morning!

Tram Sunday Fleetwood 20-07-08

Another great day with a fantastic turnout, Lord Street was wall to wall visitors. Town criers dancers and trams. If you want to visit an event which features old vehicles, Tram Sunday in Fleetwood is the event you cannot miss. We had a ride along the prom in a steam bus, and saw many old vehicles. The Mayoress and myself were invited to sit in a De Dion Buton. The lady who owned it said "Would you like to sit in it whilst I take your photo?" Would I? I was in it at the speed of sound! A chance I would have given my right arm for, Sitting in the driving seat of a car produced before the start of the twentieth century. A tiller to steer it and a brake that scraped on the road to stop it.

Royal Garden Party 14-07-08

Who said the railways are not used enough? Yvonne and I leave Preston bound for Euston and the Buckingham Palace on a fully booked train. Standing room only. As promised by Virgin Rail we arrive on time apart from a half hour diversion because someone has run a vehicle into a bridge parapet on the route. No problem though because we are still in London before twelve. We have been invited to the houses of Parliament to have lunch with our two MP's. Ben Wallace(Lancaster & Wyre) and Joan Humble (Blackpool North & Fleetwood) We have a very nice meal and do some MP spotting. Mrs Humble treats us to a trip round Westminster to see behind the scenes. It's all very interesting for a local politician and his wife. Then we take a taxi to Buckingham Palace. The sun is shining and the day is as hot as anyone would want. We arrive to find lots of people waiting for access all dressed in their best clothes. (Big hats and frilly dresses for the ladies and morning suits and uniforms for the gents (Lounge Suit for me) We see the royal party and chat to many civic parties from around the country. It's a fantastic day as we listen to the bands and walk around the grounds. You would not think you were in central London.

Nautical College Fleetwood 10-07-08

Yvonne and I are shown round the college by Tony Dumbell. It is a very impressive site with many foreign students training to be merchant navy officers. The campus is buzzing with activity as we are shown around. The highlight is undoubtedly being given the opportunity to guide a ship around a computer generated Sydney harbour. It is very realistic! As the computer generated weather worsens and the ship begins to pitch and role you feel as if the floor is moving under you. This is state of the art training and very impressive

Washington Hall County Firebrigade HQ 09-07-08

This visit makes us feel much safer in our homes bearing in mind the professional way firefighters go about their business. The range of equipment available to them is amazing. From tools to extract victims from crashed cars to a vehicle to access moors fires across bog and swamp. There are fire engines or "Pumps" as they call them, to fast reaction vehicles to respond to terrorist incidents. What a professional outfit. Well done lads!

Seacat to The Isle of Man

there are hundreds of people ready to leave when we arrive at the Fleetwood dock. Its a marvellous day as we slip down the river Wyre bound for Douglas. The trip is fine if a little lumpy as we enter Douglas. Yvonne and I are met by the consort to the Mayor of Douglas. Off to the town hall for photos and away round the island first stop the Calf of Man to watch the seals. They are marvellous, swimming and basking on the rocks. We get the royal tour of the island and then its back to Douglas for a ride on a horse drawn tram. I get to feed mints to the horse . Its back to the ship after a long and rewarding day. We arrive back at Fleetwood to see lots of camera flashes on the beach as we pass the North Euston

Burma Star Association Winter Gardens June 28th & 29th

The Burma Star weekend starts at the Winter Gardens with a massive dance and celebration of the Burma Campaign. Before the dance starts we meet in the bar for drinks, and then enter the ballroom, by borough, It's the first time I have walked across a dance floor in the full glare of a spotlight. I'm just glad the band didn't play "Colonel Bogey" as we took our seats. We had an excellent night in the company of second world war veterans, listening to stories that would make people in our politically correct times have a fit. They were non the less both interesting and amusing. Yvonne and I are introduced to the charming Viscount Slim president of the Association and his wife. Lord Slim also tells us he is involved with the SAS Association. The entertainment starts with the Ghurka Band. They look absolutely marvellous as they march to and fro across the floor. Their timing is spot on and their playing flawless.

Fleetwood Carnival June 28th

Yvonne and I are asked to judge the entries for the carnival, which is a very difficult job but we manage it with the help of Joan Humble MP. The procession starts with a bang from a rocket at the Marine Hall. As we walk down North Albert St. a boy on a bike asks me if I am the Mayor and if I am, do I live in a palace? Much to Yvonnes amusement. It's a long walk round Fleetwod town with masses of people lining the route. The weather forecast was not the best but I get a sun tan so they got in wrong again.

Fleetwood Museum " Worse Things Happen at Sea" June 20th

The weather is still very nice as we arrive at Fleetwood Museum. The hills of the Pennines are very clear, always a bad sign for the following day! We are greeted by Danny O'Niel a man I know from my ICI days and he introduces us to the museum volunteers and officers of County. The exhibition is well worth seeing, charting as it does the life, work and losses of the seafaring industry in Fleetwood. When you read the roll call of fisher men lost at sea it brings into sharp relief the actual cost of providing us with food. Things are safer today, even though the fishing fleet is a shadow of its former glory. There are a lot of people here and Yvonne and myself have a great time talking to the volunteers and swapping stories of Fleetwood times past and present. I recommend this exhibition to anyone caring to read this Webb site.

Princes Trust Fleetwood June 20th

The West View Estate in Fleetwood is putting on a show for us, courtesy of the Princes Trust. Lots of young people have got together to renovate a piece of derelict land behind West View Community Association bringing it back into use as allotments. I have to say that the enthusiasm is contagious. All the work of turning the ground over has been done by hand. The individual plots are planted up and ready for some TLC. As I talk of all the effort put into this project, I hear stories of people who have not had the best start in life but are now willing, through the Princes Trust, to take their future in their own hands and do something about it. It is heartening to see this success story in operation.

Shades Eyesight Awareness June 20th

Another glorious day as I stand with the Mayors of Blackpool and Fylde outside Blackpool town hall, with sunglasses on, raising awareness of eyesight damage done by bright sunlight. The wind is blowing from the Irish sea and it is what we in the North call "A bracing breeze" Once again I notice I am the only man present for the photo call. Even the guide dog is a bitch. Some people have all the luck!

PIP Inclusion Programme June 17th

We attend the launch of an initiative, helping to bring children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities, from the age of three to twenty five, into main stream society by mentoring them, so they can take part in activities such as scouting, swimming and attending education that most people take for granted. As I talk it becomes more apparent by the minute that the aims of PIP and the aims of the mayoral Charity are very similar albeit coming from different directions.

Thornton Gala June 14th

We all meet at the war memorial in Thornton and the gala queen lays a wreath. The procession forms up and we are off down Victoria road the village. Masses of people line the road to wave and cheer. The route is very familiar to me as we pass the offices of EINW where I used to work. We come to a halt at Fleet wood road and it starts to rain a little. Peter our attendant produces umbrellas for the Mayoress and myself so our spirits are not dampened. Its the first time we've had any rain for an engagement. Fortunately by the time we return to the gala field the rain has stopped and the sun is coming out again. Just in time for the crowning of the queen and other ceremonies. After the shower it turns into a very nice and enjoyable afternoon.

Paul Nicholas Acting School Lowther Pavillion June 12th

The show, loosely based on stories by Ronald Dahl is performed at the by children from the acting school. The whole auditorium is filled by youngsters and their families having a whale of a time, urging the actors on. The kids on stage are getting a lot out of the performance, and it seems to me that confidence building and acting skills are the order of the day. It just goes to show after all the hard work we have seen tonight from the kids there is a lot of talent in between the three boroughs.

Hello Dolly The Grand Blackpool. June 11th

Yvonne and I arrive just in time for a glass of wine with the Mayors of Blackpool and Fylde. Its at this time as I sit chatting I realise I am the only man from the three boroughs, and I have to keep the flag flying for Wyre. Its easy to do as the company is great and we all get along well. We are shown to our seats and the show starts. Well I don't know if you know the story behind Hello Dolly but in short its a story of a marriage maker who is trying to make a marriage for herself. The music is very well known and very well performed and by the end of the performance we are wishing it would last a bit longer. As the show finishes we are invited behind the stage to meet the cast. They are all pleased to meet us if tired after giving their all to the show. Both Yvonne and myself had a great time. We are both big fans of musicals.

Barton Grange Garden Centre Opening June 10th

Its a very early start as far a Mayoral engagements go. When we arrive we have plenty of time to look around. Its a superb venture in beautiful setting, with all sorts of garden plants and consumables on display, as well as life style statements. Everyone is talking about the Gents toilets. If you have not seen or heard about them I suggest you "Pay a visit" you will not be disappointed I assure you. The Princess Royal Arrives to great hubbub. Yvonne and myself welcome her to Wyre (a first for me) and very nice for Wyre. The princess takes time to look at the new development and finishes by cutting the most spectacular cake modelled on the centre. As she leaves for her next engagement we have a chat about how leisure and tourism is developing in the Borough alongside commercial ventures such as this. Wyre is justifiably proud of this development.

Preesall & Knott-End Civic Sunday June 8th

Everyone starts to arrive in Barton Square Knott-End. Once again it is a lovely morning with the sun shining and a cooling breeze blowing. We form up behind Pilling Band. Me with my bi corn and Peter the attendant with his top hat. What a hansom pair! Then it's off we march to St Oswalds church for the Civic Service. As we arrive at the church Geoff Adams sings a solo "Be Though my Vision" What a glorious voice he has. It gives me a lump in my throat as we are escorted to our seats. I was concerned as people kept arriving that there wouldn't be enough seats but we just manage with a few extras for the Brownies. It's good to see the church full to capacity. I am so lucky to have all my favourite hymns sung by the congregation in such good voice. After the service we have a meal in the parochial hall. Everyone agrees Bell Farm has done a great job of the buffet. After the meal the Mayoress collects sponsors for the Mayoral Charity roller blade run with excellent results.

Poulton Gala June 7th

As we arrive the entries are being judged on the civic centre car park. We are told there are more this year than at any other time. It's good to see such a lot of people taking part and having a great time. It amazes me to see the amount of work done by everyone. A big thanks is due to one and all. Off we go, leading the procession, with a New Orleans jazz band helping us swing along the road. Up the Breck and along Victoria Rd with a stop to have a chat with Hon Alderman Harry Taylor and his wife Francis, then onto Lower Green. The reception is magnificent, the jazz band is going mad and the cloggers and Morris Men doing their bit. Up Chapel Street and onto Ball Street. What a reception awaits us! The pavement is lined six deep with cheering crowds (I will never forget that sight as long as I live) Then along Blackpool Old Road to Cottam Hall and the crowning of Gala Queen Alice by Yvonne the Mayoress. The weather was great, the turn out magnificent and the reception Poulton gave the procession was overwhelming.

Age Concern Fleetwood June 6th

We attended Age Concern at the North Euston, it was the "Thank You" meeting for the volunteers. Its amazing the amount of work carried out by volunteers in Wyre in helping the less fortunate or mobile. The Age Concern Web Site is really worth a visit. For instance, I didn't know they did insurance for the elderly. Children from Shakespeare school's choir did a marvellous performance of four songs, finishing with "The Rose" There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

World Environment Day Bleasedale Thursday June 5th

Arrived at Bleasdale Village Hall. Lots of people up there and all the schools represented. Including three pupils called McCann. Yvonne and I are shown round the environmental stands. Renewable energy sources, Fair Trade, wool spinning by wheel, which I found facinating. Then out to the sensory garden, planted by volunteers and the children. The ribbon is cut to declare it open and we move on to the new Tramper Trail. Trampers are rough terraine battery operated transport for people who are not as mobile as they could be, but still want to experience the wildlife and countryside offered by Wyre.I must say that the weather has been very kind to us so far (Fingers Crossed) Bleasdale and the Forrest of Bowland are at their sparkling, warm best. We see brown hares in the fields as a paraglider is manouvering over Parlick hill.It really is a superb environmental initiative from Wyre and well worth a visit if you like to fill your lungs with fresh clean air whilst watching the wildlife.

Kumon Visit Cleveleys. June 3rd 2008

Kumon is a teaching aid I have never seen before but I will not forget in a while. We watfascinating Improve their maths and English skills. It hvolunteersseen to be believed, what can be achieved in education with encouragement and support. We recieved a cheque for the Mayoral Charity from the sponsorship of a speed calculation exercise. The charity is on its way now thanks to the good work of this organisation and the generosity of the people who sponsored a speed calculation lesson.

PREESALL CIVIC SUNDAY Forest June 1st. 2008

An early start from the playing fields on Lancaster road. It's the first time I have attended an event in the rain. Although it stops showering for the march to the church of St Oswalds for the service. This is my church and it is nice to see so many familiar, friendly faces at the side of the road and in church.

CATTERALL GALA May 31st

What a day! The sun was shining and I got a tan whilst I walked. Catterall is one of the longest walks of any Gala in Wyre. The Mayoress wears some (Sensible) shoes for the trip. Lots of people are joining in an having fun in what is fast becoming a country only pursuit. Why should it be that when people move from larger towns to rural areas they soon slip into the way of life in the country? Most of people enjoying it so much they end up helping with the organisation of rural festivals. It is good to see so much community spirit in Wyre with new residents having fun and joining in. As for me I am glad they do because it brings a new perspective to the rural way of doing things.

Visit to Fulwood Barracks With The High Sheriff of Lancashire Tuesday May 27th

With an early arrival it is easy to look at the military memorabilia in the regimental museum. As we entered we passed row upon row of medals presented by members of the regiment.
The High Sheriff met us and we were introduced to Mayors representing many towns, cities and boroughs from across Lancashire. The surroundings were impressive. Regimental drums and silverware, together with mementos of the many different regiments that form the Queens Lancashire Regiment, and the campaigns they have taken part in. Reading the battle honours was like a potted history of the last three hundred years from the peninsula campaign to deployment in Iraq. We were served by smartly dressed cadets in uniform, who later came and chatted with us . It was good to see young men and women so self assured and well turned out. It just goes to show, the impression of modern youth put forward in the media is not the "Big Picture" only a snap shot. The fact remains that the vast majority of young people are hard working, honest and responsible. The night ended with a fife and drum youth band very stirring and very impressive.

Well done! Both Yvonne and myself enjoyed the evening immensely.

Garstang Children's Festival Monday May 26th

It's off at 10.30, we are meeting in the centre of Garstang and the weather is great. Garstang Festival queen is crowned and away we go! It's a bit of a trial for the party holding the banner because the wind is gusting and making it difficult to carry. It's a good job the party is up to it.
What a great turn out! The streets are thronged and everyone is having a good time. We arrive at Dimples Lane and the banner has to be turned round for the journey back. No mean feat with the wind blowing. Back we walk over the river Wyre where the banner is lowered to stop it being carried away with the wind blowing through the open gap across the bridge to the East. We march back into Garstang with the police helicopter overhead hovering in a clear blue sky. Back to the arts centre for a delicious buffet lunch and interesting chat with the festival organisers and Mayor and Mayoress of Garstang. Michael and Robyn Halford.

Fylde Civic Sunday Sunday May 25th.

We walk along the prom from Fylde Council offices to St Thomas's. It's very bracing and hats are definitely a problem. The band is in good tune and we set a brisk pace with people turning out all along the route to wave and wish us well. Our local Mayors are a lively bunch who enjoy meeting and greeting.

Churchtown Festival near Garstang. Saturday May 24th

What a turnout!
The sun was shining the sky was blue the kids and their families were having a whale of a time. We paraded from Kirkland Hall to St Helens Church; Reading the lesson I could feel the history of the oldest church in Wyre. On some of the walls traces of medieval frescoes could still be seen. Then back to Kirkland Hall for judging and tea and sandwiches.
A good time was had by all!
