What is Hate Crime?
A crime is deemed as Hate Crime when it is committed against a person or property and it is motivated by the offender's prejudice against a person because of their:
- Race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
- Religion
- Gender or gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Disability
"A group of teenagers started calling us 'queer'. They followed us and continued verbally abusing us. I was extremely frightened." - Female aged 34.
A Hate Incident is an incident motivated by an offender's prejudice of someone's identity or perceived identity. They may not have committed a crime, but their actions are hostile and may cause offence or hurt.
